Protecting Your Water Supply For Compliance

Backflow prevention is a critical part of any commercial plumbing system. It protects your potable (drinking) water from contamination by preventing the reverse flow of water from any harmful sources.

At Plumb-Jet & Gas-Jet, we provide certified backflow prevention device installation, testing and servicing for businesses and commercial facilities across Tweed Heads, the Gold Coast and surrounding areas. If your site has irrigation systems, rainwater tanks, mechanical pits or any potential contaminants near a water outlet, you’ll likely need a backflow device to remain compliant with council regulations, and to ensure your water stays safe.

What Is Backflow and Why Does It Matter?

Backflow happens when the normal flow of water is reversed due to a sudden drop or change in water pressure. This reversal can allow contaminated water from external sources, such as chemicals, waste, or dirty water, to enter the clean drinking water supply.

It’s a serious health risk and the reason why councils require commercial properties to have backflow prevention measures in place.

Do You Need a Backflow Prevention Device?

Your property may need a backflow prevention device if:

  • You have an irrigation system (e.g. for landscaping or agriculture)
  • You use underground rainwater tanks connected to mains water
  • You operate a site with a mechanical pit or wash-down area
  • You have fire hose reels or large commercial plumbing setups
  • There are chemical storage areas near water outlets
  • Your premises is in a high-risk commercial or industrial zone

Not sure if your site needs one? Our qualified team can assess your plumbing and advise on the right solution.

Council Requirements for Testing and Compliance

Tweed Shire Council, Byron Bay Council and Gold Coast City Council require that all registered backflow prevention devices are tested annually by a qualified and licensed plumber. This is a legal requirement to maintain compliance.

Once tested, the results must be submitted to council. If your backflow device is found to be faulty or non-compliant, it must be repaired or replaced immediately.

At Plumb-Jet & Gas-Jet, we handle the entire process:

  • Annual backflow testing
  • Device maintenance or replacement if needed
  • Submitting test reports to council
  • Providing a compliance record for your files
